Legal activism has received little attention from scholars who have been studying the transformations of antiracist mobilizations in France since the 2000’s. Relying on the cause lawyering literature and the sociology of antiracism this article analyzes the way in which Muslim activists have been using law, the litiga- tion processes and the symbolic repertoire of antira- cism in order to defend a stigmatized group. Based on research conducted on a Muslim association that has taken a rights-based framework, this text shows that the law operates as an ambivalent mean that tends to decline with the legalization of a new conception of secularism and the strengthening of counter-terrorism and counter-radicalization measures.
