Abstract

This conversation between historians Madeline Woker and Muriam Haleh Davis is structured along three main threads. They begin by discussing Davis’ most recent book, Markets of Civilization : Islam and Racial Capitalism in Algeria (Duke University Press, 2022) and then reflect more broadly on what the concept of racial capitalism can bring to historical scholarship and the study of French colonialism in particular. They end with a discussion of the genealogy and reception of « racial capitalism » in a francophone context.
